Greg Hunt steps down amid leadership crisis.
Health minister Greg Hunt has formally tendered his resignation from the Ministry.
Hunt confirmed the move via Twitter about an hour ago, telling Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull “it has become clear to me in the last 24 hours that there has been, in my view, an irretrievable loss of support for the leadership and loss of Party unity within both the Ministry and broader party room.
“Under those circumstances I believe the Liberal Party must seek a change of leadership in order to protect the Australian people from the economic vandalism which would come from a Shorten Labor Government,” he said.
Other senior ministers to resign in the last day or so are believed to include Trade Minister Steven Ciobo, Human Services Minister Michael Keenan, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, and Citizenship Minister Alan Tudge. There is speculation that Hunt would be likely to become deputy Liberal leader in the event that Peter Dutton succeeds in his bid to oust Turnbull.
