The highly competitive 2014
Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research
Fellowship at UTS has funded a
new pharmacist-led public health
program that will benefit thousands
of Australians.
Dr Daniel Sabater Hernandez will
head up the project which will see
community pharmacists leading
a range of cardiovascular health
interventions across Australia.
Existing research demonstrating
that community pharmacist
interventions can have a positive
impact on a range of cardiovascular
risk factors has driven the initiative,
filling a gap in pharmacist-originated
public healthcare
programs.
“Community pharmacists are
ideally placed in the health system
to offer this type of patient
oriented service as a result of their
accessibility to the general public,”
says Hernandez.
“Most people have access to a
local pharmacy, and pharmacists
are known and trusted for their
ability to give advice and support
on a range of health care issues and
associated medicines.
“Additionally, pharmacists
have an excellent track record of
undertaking interventions as part
of the Fifth Community Pharmacy
Agreement between the Australian
Government and the Pharmacy
Guild of Australia.”
The program will have a focus on
chronic disease monitoring and
medication management, and will
be multidisciplinary along with
GP’s, specialists, nurses and other
allied heath care workers to provide
patients with a holistic approach to
their cardiovascular care.
