Pharmacy reductions?

A NEW Scottish study has found
that pharmacist consultations do
not reduce the mortality or
hospitilisation rates of heart failure
patients.
The Heart Failure and Optimal
Outcomes from Pharmacy Study
looked at 1,090 heart patients who
had consultations with
pharmacists in collaboration with
their GPs, as well as 1,074 patients
who only received GP care, and
found that over a five year period
both groups had around the same
rate of mortality and
hospitilisation for heart failure.
The benefit however for the
group with additional pharmacist
care was an increase of patients
taking recommended heart failure
drugs, as well as much better
medicine compliance rates.
“This could be an important
intervention in health systems with
a low number of patients receiving
recommended heart failure drugs,”
said lead researcher, Richard
Lowrie.
