Pharmacy’s new Masters

This month sixty-nine
Masters of Pharmacy graduates
from the University of Newcastle
donned their caps and gowns, and
nervously stood in line for
presentation to Chancellor
Professor Trevor Waring, to mark
the completion of what has been
the learning journey of a lifetime.
Newcastle’s program is the first
post-graduate pharmacy Masters’
degree in Australia, commencing
just six years ago with 27 students.
It’s run as part of the University’s
School of Biomedical Sciences in
the Faculty of Health under the
leadership of Prof. Shu Chuen Li
and Dr. Jenny Schneider.
The degree was started in
response to requests from regional
hospital and community
pharmacists to try and stave off
the “brain drain” that results from
country students moving to study
in Sydney.
This year’s Best in First Year PDL
prize went to Daniel Palmer, and
the Best in Second Year prize was
jointly awarded to Rosa Baleato
and Kate McCulloch.
Rosa Baleato took out the Prof
Shane Scott Memorial Award for
excellence in Pharmacotherapeutics
which was donated by the UON
Foundation - Pharmacy Fund and
presented by Chairman Chris
Piggott in memory of the inaugural
Chair of Pharmacy, Prof. Shane
Scott who died tragically last year.
Piggot told PD that jobs have
been found for nearly every
graduate, and the “community
and hospital support for the
graduates has been phenomenal”.
