More than half a million Australians offered participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program actually threw away a free kit in 2012-13 that could have saved their lives, said Cancer Council Australia. The AIHW’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Monitoring Report 2012-13 showed that just 321,000 Australians used the kits, out of a total of 964,000 invited to screen for the condition. Around 23,500 were found to require further assessment, and one out of 17 assessments detected a precancerous lesion. Bowel cancer was detected in one out of every 32 assessments.
