FOR Seizure Safety Month this Oct, Epilepsy WA is urging people to take seizure risk reduction seriously, highlighting the 300 Australians who die each year from epilepsy-related causes.
More than half of those deaths are due to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), where a person living with epilepsy dies without warning and the post-mortem fails to establish another cause of death.
The community can take action by learning seizure first aid, while people with epilepsy should take medications as prescribed, avoid known seizure triggers, and ensure they get adequate sleep.
"One in 25 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy, and the number who lose their lives to this chronic condition is totally unacceptable," said Epilepsy WA CEO, Emma Buitendag.
Additionally, for SUDEP Action Day tomorrow, Perth Railway station will shine purple in honour of those who have lost their lives to the condition.
