THE Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) will work with the government to support pharmacists who choose to be involved in the prescribing and dispensing of nicotine-containing therapeutic vapes.
National President Fei Sim said that while the amended vaping bill is not PSA's preferred model, now that legislation has passed both houses of Parliament (PD breaking news), "our focus will be firmly on supporting pharmacists to get through these changes".
"People will not be able to buy vapes on request - they must take part in a therapeutic consultation with a pharmacist who will prescribe a therapy based on clinical need."
The PSA will develop best-practice guidelines to prescribe smoking-cessation products including vapes.
