THE Therapeutic Goods Administration is reminding consumers to check that Ayurvedic medicines are registered with the regulator as it continues to receive reports of lead poisoning linked to imported or unregistered Ayurvedic products contaminated with heavy metals.
In addition to lead, testing has confirmed the presence of mercury and arsenic in several products.
The TGA has continued to intercept unregistered Ayurvedic medicines at the border and removed online ads for products containing ingredients that may indicate the presence of heavy metals.
Intercepted products also contain ingredients that are prohibited for supply and use in Australia due to their associated health risks, including Acorus calamus (vacha), Azadirachta indica (neem), and Melia azedarach (white cedar).
