THE Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in its Senate Committee submission warns that expanding pharmacy prescribing powers to treat UTIs in South Australia "is not the right call".
The organisation cited increased risk to patient safety, fragmentation of care, crowded retail settings not suitable for sensitive conversations, poor follow-through based on a survey, over-prescribing in the face of increased antibiotic resistance, and potential conflict of interest as prescribers and dispensers are the same, as some of their reasons.
