THIS week's contributor is Michelle Vogrinec, mum of three, creator of GAIA Natural Baby, MD of GAIA Skin Natural Australia - Nappy rash is caused by germs on the baby's skin together with the high level of ammonia often found in urine. Nappies can rub irritated skin and further exacerbate. Teething, sickness and general sensitivity can all lead to nappy rash. As always prevention is better than a cure. To minimise nappy rash, here are some suggestions:
* Change nappy often to encourage fresh, clean skin.
* Promote "nappy free" time.
* When washing baby, check the skin folds and don't rub inflamed areas. Use a soap and sulphate free cleanser.
* Gently pat skin dry and apply a cornstarch based baby powder to aid in keeping the area dry and clean.
* Use alcohol-free baby wipes when cleaning bub at nappy change. Also opt for those with added moisturising ingredients.
* Choose a soothing barrier cream with zinc to help keep dampness away and apply by gently patting onto bottom area.
* If using cloth nappies, ensure these are washed in laundry liquids suitable for sensitive skin. Add a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse cycle of your wash to break down any leftover soap residue (also keeps nappies soft).
