THIS week's contributor is Michelle Vogrinec, mum of three, creator of GAIA Natural Baby, MD of GAIA Skin Natural Australia - Because eczema skin is dry skin, it has lost some of its barrier function. It is therefore unable to retain moisture and block irritants resulting in 'flare-ups' which can be red, crusty, scaly, flaky, weepy and itchy.
ECZEMA SKINCARE ROUTINE 1, 2, 3:
Step 1: Cleanse
Choosing a suitable cleanser to use and one that won't further dry or irritate the skin is extremely important. Therefore, it is recommended not to use soap or harsh cleansing bars, artificial fragrances or cleansers with harsh detergents when washing skin, but to choose a pH balanced, soap and sulphate free product, preferably with added moisturising ingredients.
Step 2: Moisturise
Moisturiser should be used liberally and frequently (several times a day) or at least morning and night. Apply moisturiser gently, within three minutes of bathing (while the skin is still slightly damp) to 'lock in' the moisture. Continue to use moisturiser daily, even when the eczema patches have improved to prevent flare-ups
Step3: Protect
Choose a thick cream, lotion or balm to provide optimal skin protection, particularly on the eczema prone areas and opt for skin soothing, natural ingredients.
