A new Australian National University study has found that women are 75% more likely to experience adverse reactions to prescription drugs compared to men, prompting calls for a new approach to women's healthcare.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners highlighted the research which analysed over two million data points to conclude that the differences cannot be just attributed to difference in body sizes, with other factors including iron levels, temperature, stored fat and heart rate also playing a role.
The study's author, Dr Laura Wilson, noted that most biomedical research had been conducted on male cells or male animals, with assumptions the same results will apply to females.
