Zika mossies beware
February 10, 2016
Research scientists in California
and Virginia, USA, say they have
the technology to wipe out the
Zika virus vector mosquito aedes
aegypti within a year, according to
MIT Technology Review.
The technology, called a “gene
drive”, uses the gene-snipping
technology CRISPR to force a
genetic change to spread through a
population as it reproduces.
Release of a gene drive in the wild
would be hotly debated but with
transmission now proven by sex,
blood and saliva, pressure to act
will be strong, the scientists said.
