DEPRESSION in type 2 diabetics may increase the risk of developing dementia, according to a recent study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. The Diabetes and Aging Study looked at a sample of 19,239 diabetes registry members aged between 30 and 75, and found that depression in patients with diabetes was associated with a substantively increased risk for development of dementia compared with those with diabetes alone. During the three- to five-year period, 80 of 3,766 patients (2.1%) with comorbid depression and diabetes vs 158 of 15,473 patients (1.0%) with diabetes alone had 1 or more diagnoses of dementia. Patients with comorbid depression also had a 100% increased risk of dementia during the three to five years postbaseline.
