TWO US women are suing Unilever, the manufacturer behind St Ives Apricot Scrub, for US$5m.
The ladies from New York and California are claiming the product has not passed tests by dermatologists, despite proclaiming so on the tube.
They also claim the product, which they say has caused them serious skin irritation, would never be endorsed by any skin care professionals.
In their legal papers the women quote dermatologists who have criticised the facial scrub project, referring to an article in New York Magazine which purported it created 'micro-tears' in the skin, making the skin more vulnerable to environmental damages, pollution, and sun damage.
Unilever has put out an official statement saying that "for over 30 years, consumers have loved and trusted the St. Ives brand to refresh and revitalize their skin."
The company said it was "proud to be America's top facial scrub brand and stand by our dermatologist tested formula".
St Ives products are widely stocked in Australia, with Priceline and Chemist Warehouse among major groups which carry the brand.
