THE Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA).
The partnership has enabled the launch of a new co-branded, co-endorsed "Pharmacist Diabetes Educator" career pathway, to provide guidance to pharmacists pursuing a career in diabetes education to support people living with the chronic condition.
"This MoU will benefit both organisations to enhance diabetes education skills, knowledge, expertise, resources and policies to benefit all people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, their carers and the community," said PSA National Board director, Teresa Di Franco, who is a pharmacist credentialled diabetes educator (CDE).
Key objectives of the MoU include ensuring pharmacists are well supported in providing diabetes education and services; boosting the training activities available to pharmacists; helping networking between pharmacist CDEs through a special interest group; providing training for pharmacy staff; and building relationships between pharmacists, pharmacist CDEs and the community.
ADEA president, Giulian Murfet said multiple health professionals were required to work as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve the best outcomes for people with diabetes and their carers.
Mentoring by a pharmacist CDE in the PSA's mentoring program will also be recognised by ADEA's credentialling process under the Memorandum of Understanding.
