A major pharmacy chain in the United States has ruffled feathers by announcing a drastic new security measure.
Walgreens plans to equip its staff with body cameras at select stores around New York City - a decision it said was intended to help keep customers and workers safe.
"Body cameras can help de-escalate conflicts, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for everyone," the pharmacy giant explained, but did not provide details on the safeguards or how the footage could be used.
Shoppers are not too happy about the security measure, with some taking to Reddit to voice their concerns.
"That's so weird considering the number of cameras they already have installed per square foot," one observed.
"I will not shop at any store that enacts this," another Reddit user proclaimed.
"Actually have adequate staff #'s and a security guard that can actually act with authority if you are concerned about safety - more cameras is a lazy idea that won't help," wrote another.
According to local news outlet News12, signs will be posted in stores to alert shoppers to the cameras in use.
Responding to concerns about customer privacy, Walgreens told News12, "We understand the importance of protecting customer privacy and have safeguards in place to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations".
