FORMER Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) President, Professor Michael Dooley, has been honoured with the organisations highest honour, the Fred J Boyd Award.
Presenting the award at the SHPA's Medicines Management 2022 conference in Brisbane, outgoing President, Peter Fowler, lauded his predecessor's commitment to improving patient care and his stewardship of the organisation.
'Under his leadership, the revitalisation of Specialty Practice in 2017 was an instant success," Fowler said.
"More than half of all SHPA members have been consistently enrolled since 2018 and the uniquely broad and democratic structure has powered many of SHPA's strategic achievements, including expanded education offerings and updated and new Standards of Practice.
"With an eye on the future and the importance of an expertly trained pharmacy workforce, Michael's leadership also saw the introduction of Foundation Residencies, now in place at nearly 50 sites nationally, and Advanced Training Residencies, which can now be undertaken in many leading pharmacy specialties and are continuing to expand."
The SHPA's 2022 Australian Clinical Pharmcy Award went to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Complex Needs Coordination Team Pharmacist, Deirdre Criddle, for her "fierce advocacy for the recognition of pharmacists as medicines management experts and leadership in the critical transitions of care space".
Newly elected SHPA President, Tom Simpson, said Criddle had been "a staunch supporter of robust credentiallt that drives our professional forward and allows practitioners to appreciate and maximise their impact on safe patient care".
"Her innovative outlook and dedication to patient safety have made her a leading voice on the need to evolve the accredited pharmacist profession, and the importance for specialist, expert pharmacists to be embedded in residential aged care and GP clinics, an emerging frontier of our profession," Simpson said.
The SHPA also recognised Tasmanian, Duncan McKenzie, who is a clinical advisor to Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, with the 2022 Medal of Meritt.
Simpson described McKenzie as a "trusted voice, advising on pharmacy scope of practice".
"Duncan's positive influence on the future of our profession in Tasmania is also clear," he said.
