CHASTINA Heck, a senior pharmacist and First Nations advocate, credited the recent 2024 NAIDOC Week's theme - 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud' - for revitalising her dedication to her culture and community, in both her personal and professional life.
"After the referendum, I experienced a surprising decline in energy and excitement," Heck (pictured) told Pharmacy Daily.
"This NAIDOC Week, my inner fire was re-ignited, particularly by the expanding network of First Nations allied health professionals who are unapologetically proud of their heritage and contributions."
Heck, Chair of PSA's Community of Specialty Interest (CSI) on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Practice, reflected on her time as a pharmacy student.
"I wasn't aware of any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people studying pharmacy back then," she said.
She noted the increased recognition and visibility of the profession over the past two decades, and the move to holistic healthcare, which is "imperative" for First Nations people.
"Because of this move and investment in other initiatives such as scholarships and mentoring opportunities, there is a growing number of First Nations pharmacists and students - this should be celebrated."
Heck also emphasised the importance of representation.
"It means more bright minds can join committees and boards, influencing change from the top.
"However, meeting the need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in these roles is challenging due to the small pool.
"Those who do identify often feel a cultural obligation to participate because if not 'me,' then who?"
She encouraged workplaces to support First Nations pharmacists.
"Be proud and consider being 'loud' by engaging in research projects, national boards, or organisational committees - you have so much to offer."
Heck has also invited First Nations professionals to join the PSA CSI group on Facebook. JG
