New global code of practice

THE International Federation of
Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and
Associations (IFPMA) is updating its
Code of Practice.
The Code governs how companies
interact with healthcare
professionals and patient
organisations, and its creation was
aided by Aussie organisations such
as Medicines Australia, to ensure
that engagements with healthcare
professionals are undertaken
ethically.
The updated Code includes sections
covering Basis of Interactions,
Pre-Approval Communications and
Off-Label Use, Standards of
Promotional Information, Printed
Promotional Material, Electronic
Materials, Interactions with
Healthcare Professionals, Clinical
Research and Transparency,
Support for Continuing Medical
Education, Interactions with Patient
Organisations, Company
Proceedures and Responsibilities
and Infringements, Complaints and
Enforcements.
“Medicines Australia endorses
the new expanded IFPMA Code of
Practice, but our own Code of
Conduct goes some way further,”
said Medicines Australia Chief
Executive, Dr Brendan Shaw.
“Governments, doctors and
patients must have confidence that
those interactions meet the highest
ethical standard.
“Both the Medicines Australia
Code of Conduct and the IFPMA
Code of Practice exist to provide
that confidence,” he added.
