A NEW report released last week, Let's Talk About Weight: A national report on lived experiences of obesity and weight management in Australia, highlights the whole-of-life impact of the condition experienced by two thirds of Australians over 18.
The report calls for a national reframing of obesity as a chronic, complex disease, not a lifestyle choice, with pharmacists well placed to provide non-judgmental guidance, correct misconceptions, and support patients who may otherwise avoid healthcare.
Commissioned by pharmaceutical company Lilly Australia, the report was based on a survey of over 1,300 Australian adults and explores how weight influences every area of life, from health and mental wellbeing to relationships, careers, social participation and engagement with healthcare professionals.
It found that over half feel judged because of their weight, and one in four avoided healthcare due to fear of judgement.
Negatives experiences with a healthcare professional were common, and many respondents believed their weight concerns were not serious enough to discuss with a healthcare professional.
Contributing experts have stressed that compassionate, person-first language and better healthcare support are key to breaking the cycle of shame, avoidance and declining wellbeing - the report is HERE.
