Pharmacist identity checks

THE new national Pharmacy
Board of Australia has confirmed
that from 01 Jul it will require new
applicants for registration to meet
proof of identity requirements,
which rely on a 100 point check.
The Board will also be writing to
every registered pharmacist later
this month to support their
transition into the national scheme.
The letter will explain each
pharmacist’s registration type from
01 Jul and detail the information
which will appear in the online
national Register of Pharmacists.
In general pharmacists will
transition to the category of
registration that matches their
current registration, and a Board
committee will consider cases in
which registrants consider that
there is an error in their proposed
registration type so they can be
resolved before 01 Jul.
At its sixth meeting, held late last
month, the Board also said it
“recognises the skill and experience”
of current state and territory board
members “and is keen to retain this
in the transition to the national
scheme” which will see the existing
boards disappear.
The Board said it would be
writing to current members of state
and territory boards seeking
expressions of interest to serve on
panels under the national scheme.
At the meeting the board also
confirmed the registration
examination requirements for
interns which will apply from 01 Jul,
with minimal changes for the
current cohort of interns.
Oral examinations will be
conducted in each jurisdiction by
staff who transition to state and
territory offices of the Australian
Health Practitioner Regulation
Agency, and these same staff will
be a point of contact for interns
and preceptors about supervised
practice matters of a serious nature.
The Board said it was also
continuing its work on developing
an accreditation agreement with
the Australian Pharmacy Council
and approved standards for intern
training programs which the APC
will use to assess 2011 programs.
