RESEARCH conducted by the University of Queensland has found that the appearance of freckles and moles on the iris indicates a higher risk of melanoma, particularly in people under the age of 40.
"We found the presence of three or more iris pigmented lesions was associated with a 45% increased risk of melanoma," said Dermatology Research Centre's Associate Professor Rick Sturm.
"We hope that these findings will help doctors identify those people who may be at increased risk."
The study involved 1,117 participants of European descent living in South-East Queensland.
